Dictionary of Netwar (Lenakel language)



This is the first ever extensive dictionary of Netwar language (western Tanna, Republic of Vanuatu) published online. It is the fruit of several years of my work among the inhabitants of the island of Tanna. It contains translations of local expressions, pronunciation recordings and photographic documentation. Its purpose is to help in the preservation of the language and in passing it to the young generation.

  •  (terme générique) n nam 
  •  n metu 
    , espèce de la mer profonde.
  •  n kulap 
    , espèce d'un grand poisson de mer avec des grand yeux.
  •  n iahak 
    , espèce probablement mangeant le corail. La personne, qui le mange trop, va perdre ses dents. Les enfants ne doivent absolument pas le manger. cf.: 'ihi'.
  •  n kotéa 
    , espèce vénimeuse.
  •  n umé 
    , terme générique pour les poissons avec une bosse sur la tête. Ex.: poisson-perroquet à bosse ~ makam umé
