Not counting the preceding two weeks in Italy, Lourdes was my first serious trip abroad. I worked in Camping de la Forêt, located not far of the Lourdes grotto and owned by friends of my family. I made also a couple of trips to the Pyrenees, the Lac du Gaube and Pont d'Espagne. Of course I spent a lot of time down at the grotto and had the luck to be present during the visit of the Holy Father John Paul II in Lourdes. My newly acquired school French beneficiated a lot of this stay, although the Basque dialect of local mountaineers, who sometimes stopped in the camping bar for a drink of pastis, was quite a challenge. If only I knew how much this first experience with the French will be of use to me in the future ...
