2009 Italy, Giugliano
Just two weeks after returning from the Pacific, I was again packing the luggage. My "sabbatical year" was in its full swing and it was necessary not to lose the time. I had two months for me in Giugliano in Campagna in Istituto Maristi, a school belonging to the congregation of Marist brothers. My goal was to get to know closely their life and work for the young ... and to see if that might be the program for the rest of my life.
For two months I shared the life of the community of brothers and worked with them as much as possible in the school and also quite a lot on extracurricular activities with local young people. The community was a young and dynamic one and very nice. My Italian, in everyday contact with young, was enriched by a few words of the downright funny Neapolitan accent. I learned a lot about myself, about education and training and that school is not only the hours in the classroom. And who would have thought then, that four years later I will make use of these experiences on the other end of the world?
